Sorry it took me so long to answer this dear, I had to watch it. HONESTLY I WAS VERY DISPLEASED. I knew about the program before hand and prayed to GOD they wouldn’t mention lolita. Of course they did. They also went to a lolita meet omG NO.
I was displeased, but not because of the people who wanted to be dolls. People can do what they want, I just know that I’m going to be getting the heat for this. I’m the one who is going to go out in lolita and people are going to associate me with Emily and Venus. PLUS they were obviously trying to make all the people on this look like nut jobs. I, personally, do NOT act different when in lolita, I dont use it as an escape. Lolita is a thing that has been absorbed into my normal life and my world does not revolve around it. I am annoyed because I know this notion of lolita being equated to “wanting to be a doll because I want to be perfect and to escape from my bad childhood/family” is going to plague the lolita community as a whole for long time.
I was going to write up something about my reaction to the episode but she just hit the nail on the head and said pretty much everything I have to say so this saves me a bit of time. Obviously not everything worn in the episode was Lolita, but there was enough Lolita thrown in there that could be problematic.
I do have to say though that I admire the fact that Emily had the courage to introduce her lifestyle to her family by literally just walking in and basically saying “this is me.” But her family also has a point when they say that there are times that you have to put on plain old work clothes and get a normal job so you can afford to wear what you want and be who you want to be in your free time.
